Sylvestris Land Management

Sylvestris

We believe in the potential of land management to restore nature at scale, mitigate the climate crisis, and contribute to resilient rural communities. We help land managers deliver economically sustainable land management with positive long-term environmental, ecological and social outcomes.

What We Do

Based in Highland Perthshire, with 25 years combined experience in estate management, conservation and community engagement, we support rural businesses on the management of their property and natural assets. We design and deliver landscape scale nature restoration, made viable through a blend of public funding and private finance.

Before founding Sylvestris, William and Charlie launched the Natural Capital service line for a national rural property consultancy. We advise some of Scotland’s highest profile land-based businesses, environmental charities, eNGO consortia, and pioneering farmer groups.

Estate Management

  • We provide our clients with strategic estate management & business planning advice. We understand how nature restoration and natural capital fit into diverse land and property businesses, and contribute to an integrated approach to land use.
  • Impact Reporting: our clients want to measure their environmental, social & economic impacts. We help them assess those impacts to inform management decisions & communicate their performance to their stakeholders & the public.
  • Community Engagement: appropriate engagement with local communities over decisions relating to land is important. We work with our clients to structure engagement to deliver the best outcomes for communities & land managers.

Natural Capital

  • Partnerships: we set up long-term partnerships between our clients & corporate & institutional buyers of ecosystem services to sustainably finance restoration projects & find opportunities for collaboration beyond the simple sale of credits.
  • Due diligence: our clients are as worried as we are about greenwashing. We do due diligence on all prospective buyers of ecosystem services to make sure that where they’re to be used as offsets or mitigation for environmental impact, that everything possible has been done to reduce or remove that impact at source.
  • Contracting: one of the biggest barriers to the trading of ecosystem services is agreeing contractual terms. The partnerships we help our clients enter are long term & we make sure their terms are balanced to reflect the practical reality of managing restoration projects.
  • Project Development: we register, validate & verify projects under the Woodland Carbon & Peatland Codes
  • Community Benefits: we help our clients incorporate direct & indirect community benefits into the design of natural capital projects.

Nature Restoration

  • Project Design: we lead the design of landscape-scale restoration projects, in partnership with land managers, technical & local experts.
  • Bid writing: we have a track record of securing multi-year funding for multi-habitat landscape-scale nature restoration projects across Scotland.
  • Partnerships: we have experience facilitating collaboration at scale between owners & occupiers through landscape partnerships or farm clusters to deliver nature restoration.
  • Project Management: we project manage landscape-scale grant-funded nature restoration projects delivered through public, private & third sector partnerships.
  • Community: consultation is a key to delivering land use changes for nature restoration & we engage with the community so they are informed & able to contribute to the design of proposed interventions.

We have reduced rates for not-for-profit organisations with missions aligned with our own, and offer pro bono support to community landowners looking to deliver ecological restoration through natural capital.
